What comes to mind when you think of February? Most people probably think of Valentine’s Day, hearts, and candy (all very good things!), but at Kids Smiles we think of healthy teeth and bright smiles in honor of National Children’s Dental Health Month. What began as a single day observance roughly 30 years ago by the American Dental Association, the focus on children’s dental health has grown into a month long campaign to raise awareness about the importance of childhood dental health through events and activities for families across the country.

This year Kids Smiles’ focus during National Children’s Dental Health Month will be “29 Days of giggles and grin...

Last month, Kids Smiles celebrated our amazing team of volunteers during National Volunteer Week. Our volunteers come from a wide range of backgrounds and contribute many different skills and talents to help Kids Smiles meet the oral health care needs of children in our community. While many of our volunteers take their experience with them as they further their education or move on to other careers, one former volunteer’s journey brought her back to Kids Smiles.

In 2009, Manali Deshpandi became a Kids Smiles volunteer. With an interest in both dentistry and working with children, she found Kids Smiles was an ideal fit. As an education volunteer Manali delivered fun, hands-on experiment...

Kids Smiles’ first dental center was launched in 2001 in Southwest Philadelphia with four employees and no patients of record. Patients soon began to fill the tiny office within the Mercy Wellness Center. Kids Smiles grew several times within the current space and by 2005, had served 17,000 children with ever increasing demand. To meet the demand, Kids Smiles expanded into West Philadelphia with its second site. Eleven years later, we find ourselves growing at an exceptional rate; having served 73,000 children in our dental centers since 2001 and 18,000 children annually.

To accommodate our growth, the Sweet Sixteen Capacity Building Campaign includes new facilities and capital improvem...

During National Children’s Dental Health Month in February, the American Dental Association hosts Give Kids a Smile Day, a day for the dental community to come together to provide free care for uninsured children. At Kids Smiles, we participate in the annual event, but have also expanded our efforts. Building on the GKAS campaign, the Kids Smiles’ Grin & Share It program eliminates the financial barriers parents face when seeking oral health care for their children throughout the entire year.

Each month, Kids Smiles’ clinics reserve appointment times for uninsured patients to receive free routine preventive and more advanced restorative care. The program also helps uninsured...

Children in Philadelphia will have healthier smiles thanks to grant funding totaling $100,000 from the Independence Blue Cross Foundation to Kids Smiles, a non-profit children’s dental organization. This generous funding will enable Kids Smiles to continue providing comprehensive dental care and oral health education programs to over 18,000 Philadelphia area children this year as well as support the organization’s Sweet Sixteen Capacity Building Campaign.

The Kids Smiles Sweet Sixteen Campaign was launched to dramatically increase access to care for underserved children through three major initiatives: a new dental center and capital improvements, the expansion of Kids Smiles&rs...

Children’s dental health probably isn’t the first thing that comes to mind when you think of February, however the American Dental Association has been pairing the two since 1949. The first national observance started as a single day and roughly 30 years later it was extended to a month long celebration known today as National Children’s Dental Health Month. This month also hosts Give Kids a Smile Day, a day where the dental community comes together to provide free care.

Why is it important to promote children’s dental health?

Attitudes and habits that are established at an early age are more likely to last a lifetime; therefore instilling the proper oral hygiene ear...
