Last month, Kids Smiles celebrated our amazing team of volunteers during National Volunteer Week. Our volunteers come from a wide range of backgrounds and contribute many different skills and talents to help Kids Smiles meet the oral health care needs of children in our community. While many of our volunteers take their experience with them as they further their education or move on to other careers, one former volunteer’s journey brought her back to Kids Smiles.

In 2009, Manali Deshpandi became a Kids Smiles volunteer. With an interest in both dentistry and working with children, she found Kids Smiles was an ideal fit. As an education volunteer Manali delivered fun, hands-on experiments and activities to children of all ages in our...

What comes to mind when you think of February? Most people probably think of Valentine’s Day, hearts, and candy (all very good things!), but at Kids Smiles we think of healthy teeth and bright smiles in honor of National Children’s Dental Health Month. What began as a single day observance roughly 30 years ago by the American Dental Association, the focus on children’s dental health has grown into a month long campaign to raise awareness about the importance of childhood dental health through events and activities for families across the country.

This year Kids Smiles’ focus during National Children’s Dental Health Month is our Grin & Share It program, which provides free dental care to uninsured children. Although tooth decay is preventable, it remains the most common chronic childhood illness and without treatment can lead to severe pain and infections, missed school days, poor speech and mouth development, and decreased self-esteem. Children without insurance are 5 times more likely than insured children not to have seen a dentist in the past year, significantly increasing their chances of suffering from tooth decay and its consequences. The Grin & Share It program is so important because it provides free dental care to over 2,000 children every year with limited or no insurance coverage who otherwise would not be able to afford the treatment they need.

As we observe National Children’s Dental Health Month this February, we are asking our friends to show support for children’s dental health care by making a donation to Grin & Share It. Your donation will help provide free dental care for children with limited or no insurance, a gift that will bring healthy smiles to children in our community. Please join us by visiting the Kids Smiles Grin & Share It fundraiser website https://grinandshareit2018.causevox.com/!

Kids Smiles’ first dental center was launched in 2001 in Southwest Philadelphia with four employees and no patients of record. Patients soon began to fill the tiny office within the Mercy Wellness Center. Kids Smiles grew several times within the current space and by 2005, had served 17,000 children with ever increasing demand. To meet the demand, Kids Smiles expanded into West Philadelphia with its second site. Eleven years later, we find ourselves growing at an exceptional rate; having served 73,000 children in our dental centers since 2001 and 18,000 children annually.

To accommodate our growth, the Sweet Sixteen Capacity Building Campaign includes new facilities and capital improvements, which will increase the space and effici...

During National Children’s Dental Health Month in February, the American Dental Association hosts Give Kids a Smile Day, a day for the dental community to come together to provide free care for uninsured children. At Kids Smiles, we participate in the annual event, but have also expanded our efforts. Building on the GKAS campaign, the Kids Smiles’ Grin & Share It program eliminates the financial barriers parents face when seeking oral health care for their children throughout the entire year.

Each month, Kids Smiles’ clinics reserve appointment times for uninsured patients to receive free routine preventive and more advanced restorative care. The program also helps uninsured families determine if they qualify for insura...
